300 words Thinking about Research: Responding to Wallace-Wells

REQUIREMENTS:

WORD COUNT: 300 words (minimum)

“Cascades” is a heavily annotated chapter/piece of writing. In fact, the notes in the book comprise ten pages of references and sources for most of Wallace-Wells’ claims. This was especially clear to those of you who read the digital alternative to “Cascades”: “The Uninhabitable Earth, Annotated” which is, well, annotated.

For this short process assignment, I want you to think about this use of research, how it impacts the audience’s understand of the information, and how the author’s presentation has a different impact than the study or article he references.

Focus on two different types of annotations – one that references a credible source and one that clarifies a point – and analyze the author’s intent and purpose. Why does he use each type of reference? What is the rhetorical purpose?
