300 words SDLC

We’ve already had a very good conversation about SDLC.  I’m going to post what your online lecture says about the 5 phases. This will be important for exam times.

  • Systems Investigation is the process of gaining a clear understanding of the problem to be solved. During this step, an organization needs to understand the problem and determine whether it is worth solving.
  • Systems Analysis is the process of thoroughly defining the problem. During this step, we review the organization’s current procedures and the information systems used to perform those procedures, as related to the need described in the systems investigation. A successful system analysis will develop several alternatives and propose a final recommendation for the solution to be developed.
  • Systems Design determines how the new system will work to meet the business needs defined during system analysis. During this step, the goal is to develop a logical and physical system specification based on the recommended solution.
  • Systems Implementation involves creating or acquiring the various system components (hardware, software, databases, etc.) defined in the design step, assembling them, and putting them into production. During this step, an organization must decide whether to create the system using its own resources or purchase an existing solution. Creating a system is often referred to as a custom solution, and implementation will include coding, several stages of testing, and deployment of the system.
  • Systems Maintenance and Review is to check and modify the system so that it continues to meet the business needs of the organization. It is important to note that any major changes to an existing system will lead us back to the first step, systems investigation.

I am also going to tell you that each large corporate environment has their own idea about what these phases are and how best to maneuver through them.  Twice, as I was interviewing for Systems Analyst positions, I was asked the question, “Please tell me the phases of the systems development life cycle”.  I have been asked to describe them in 3 phases and in 7 phases.  I answered by remembering one word “PADIOS”.  If you can memorize this one word, you will be able to recall SDLC very well.  Your resume will be put toward the top of the stack!!  PADIOS stands for PLANNING, ANALYSIS, DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION AND OPERATION/SUPPORT.  Planning and Investigation are one in the same; just synonyms.  Operation and support are words that describe what happens in the maintenance phase.

If you don’t want to remember the keyword PADIOS, that is totally fine.  Maybe you can come up with a mnemonic code that helps you remember SDLC better!  PJ
