1. Jacob Ind stated that life without parole sends the message, “You are not worthy of rehabilitation. You’re worthless. You’re a monster. You’re not fit for society. And you’re a dangerous, rabid animal that needs to be kept away.” Do you think that most people would agree or disagree with this statement and why? Why is this type of labeling problematic?

2. What mitigating factors existed in Jacob Ind’s case? Do you think that, because of these factors, Jacob should have gotten a more lenient sentence? Why or why not?

3. Colorado was once considered a progressive state in juvenile justice. In 1993, their policies changed dramatically in requiring stricter sanctions for juveniles and treating them as adults. Some suggest that this was a reaction to what is referred to as the “summer of violence”. How did the media play a major role in affecting these policy changes?
