This week we read and saw a documentary about a cultural practice most, if not all of us, find to be completely unacceptable – female genital mutilation. In our own society we discourage such mutilation, or do we? There are many articles regarding teen cosmetic surgery in the U.S. Your essay should focus on cosmetic surgery related to body image and not surgery to repair congenital defects or injury caused by accidents. This is more about chinplants, breast augmentation, and/or the so-called ‘nose job.’
Write a short essay (no less than three pages) describing whether or not you think this kind of cosmetic surgery to satisfy a particular societal image of the body is a form of mutilation or not. Your essay must include three or more references. The references must be credible (no Wikipedia or random websites). Your sources must come from articles researched via the Leatherby library website or academic database.
