Assignment Description

The major purpose of the essay will be to assess:

1.comprehension of concepts from contemporary rhetorical theory.

2.the ability to apply these concepts to a specific context in which rhetoric is an important feature and

3.to demonstrate how rhetorical theory enables a broader or more comprehensive understanding of the strategy that underwrites instances of public, political communication.

I strongly recommend that students use the above three directives as sections and/or paragraphs of a logically dependent topic-sentence structure. Students may not re-use the same examples or concepts from their first essay. (I uploaded“ my first essay”)
This assignment builds upon critical writing 1 by asking students to consider an instance of public/political rhetoric, this time from the perspective of contemporary rhetorical theory.

Students should include 3-5 source citations in this essay. These may include: The role of
*audiences
*symbols
*language
*narrative
*visual rhetoric
*the rhetorical situation
*secrecy rhetoric
*rhetorics of otherness
*demagogic rhetorics
The final product of this assignment should be an essay of no more than 2 pages.
The essay’s introduction should contain at minimum the following components:

1. a clear thesis statement that argues that a public event can be explained through the use of a specific rhetorical concept,
2. a purpose statement that justifies this connection by stating the profit of analyzing rhetoric,
3. a preview statement that clearly outlines the progression of the paper’s major arguments. The arguments of the body of the essay should be organized either according to a logically dependent or logically independent organizational structure.
The body of the essay should also have clearly identifiable topic sentences (a) connect and reinforce the essay’s thesis and (b) neatly summarize and set up the individual paragraphs. As a general rule, students should be able to read the first sentence of each paragraph together as a coherent, single paragraph to demonstrate cohesion and fidelity to the thesis of the essay.
Please do not exceed two pages, and it is important that you make use of clear organization and topic sentences in your writing. Please indicate which question you are answering in the header of your document (in addition to identifying information like student name, class, date), offer a prospective answer as a thesis statement, and briefly discuss researched support for the thesis. For additional writing and organizational advice for this assignment, please consult the following document, which was covered in class: Additional Guidance for Critical Writing.docx(I uploaded).
Citations
The critical writing essay should contain (1) in text citations (guidelines for in-text citations can be found here: Citations for Critical Writing.docx(I uploaded). and (2) a works cited section at the end of the document containing 3-5 properly formatted citations (more information about MLA (Links to an external site.), APA (Links to an external site.), and Chicago (Links to an external site.) can be found at the corresponding links). Points will be deducted from the assignment if a works cited page is included without incorporating in-text citations.
