Introduction
For the exercises focused on the elements of value and volume, you will complete a Value Scale and Blending Square. See the image example above for more information. Use the image example as a visual component of the instructions. If you can’t see the image, it’s available here: 10StepValueStripBlendingSquare.jpg.
These exercises will help develop your blending and shading skills and will give you insight as to the importance value-range plays when rendering three-dimensional objects.
Materials Needed
- 18” x 24” White Drawing Paper
- Drawing Board
- Graphite Drawing Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B)
- Kneaded Eraser
- Ruler
- Pencil Sharpener
Instructions
- Remove one sheet of 18” x 24” paper from your White Drawing Paper pad.
- Be careful not to tear the paper unevenly as you remove it from the pad.
- The sheets are attached to the pads with an adhesive or spiral binding that can make it difficult to pull the sheets off cleanly. I suggest pulling the sheet slowly and carefully from the binding.
- Use the format layout of the two exercises (Exercise #3 on top and Exercise #4 on bottom), as shown in the image example.
- Use a ruler and #2 pencil to delineate the correct layout, scale, and format sizes of the boxes to be used in the two exercises.
- For Exercise #3, re-create the image example’s 10-Step Value Scale.
- For Exercise #4, re-create the image example’s 4” Blending Square.
Tips on Photographing Your Work
- Subdued daylight (overcast morning light/noontime shade) works best.
- When shooting indoors, point spotlights at the drawing from both sides (daylight balanced LED bulbs are best.) Position lights so they are pointed down towards the drawing, so glare is reduced.
- Place the artwork against a neutral gray, white, or black background.
- Be sure to point the camera lens straight at the center of the artwork to avoid keystoning. Keystoning is when either the top or bottom half of the picture is wider than it should be. See the following link for more information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystone_effect (Links to an external site.)
- Place an 18-inch ruler on the top left of the drawing to contextualize size/scale. Be sure the ruler is readable and make sure it doesn’t cover the artwork.
Submission Instructions
- Take a photo of the artwork with an 18-inch ruler
- The ruler should be next to the outside edge of any side of your drawing with the numbers visible. Do not place the ruler on top of the artwork.
- Upload and Submit the photo to the assignment
- Click on Attach
- Click on Choose File
- Locate and Open your photo
