This blog is a communal site for sharing our personal responses to each week’s readings. Blog entries should be in the neighborhood of 500 words long (the equivalent of one double-spaced page) and should be posted before midnight on the Wednesday before class (except on the dates shown in the syllabus). Response entries are less formal than academic essays, and you should feel free to mix some of your personal voice or experiences with your analysis. Keep in mind everyone in the class will be able to read these responses.
The Content: First and foremost, each blog entry should focus on something concrete and quotable from the text. You might focus your entry on a particular image, passage, scene, moment of dialogue, or pattern of word choice. In other words, the reader should be able to “locate” the object of your analysis/response. The best response blogs are mini-arguments that take an interesting snippet of text, analyze it, and propose a larger argument based on this analysis. However, it is also perfectly acceptable to use the blogged response to meditate on a scene that you found confusing, troubling, exciting, worrisome, or otherwise noteworthy for some reason. In this case the blog entry might investigate why the scene seemed so remarkable.
