Second Week Assignments: Integumentary System

The Integumentary System comprises the skin, nails, and glands. The skin covers the external surfaces of the body. The average adult has two square yards of skin, making it the largest bodily organ. The skin forms a protecting covering of the body, which when unbroken prevents entry of bacteria and other invading organism. The skin also protects the body from water loss and from damaging effects of ultraviolet light. Other functions include regulation of body temperature and synthesis of vitamin D.

The related structures are: Sebaceous glands, Sweat glands, Hair, and Nails.
