PLEASE READ THE REQUIREMENTS CAREEULLY
The publisher of a major international newspaper has asked you to write an essay for the paper’s editorial page. In the essay, the editor wants you to discuss why the rise of Islam (not as a religion, but as a historical phenomenon) is important for world history. Since you cannot, in a brief essay, present all possible aspects of such a vast question, you should concentrate on a few that seem to you to be most significant.
I am NOT challenging you to find the “right” answer to the assignment; there are many different ways of responding to the question, any of which can be effective. Rather, I am concerned with HOW you make your case.
In terms of formatting requirements, please make sure your paper is one full page, single space, 12-font.
- Organization and Argument: the logic of your argument and the cogency with which you organize and present it.
- Evidence: The degree to which your argument, when not patently common sense, is supported by known or attestable historical evidence. Evidence mentioned in your study materials should be adequate to frame a short essay such as this one.
- Style: Clarity of your prose, proper grammar and syntax, punctuation, spelling, and other writing mechanics.
